Q & A Safari

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What Are the Big-5?

The Big Five refers to a group of five large animals that are considered some of the most sought-after species for wildlife viewing and big-game hunting in Africa. The Big Five animals are:

  1. The African elephant is the world's largest land animal. It is characterized by its large size, long trunk, and distinctive tusks. African elephants are found in various habitats across Africa and are highly intelligent and social animals.
  2. The African lion is a large predatory cat and is often referred to as the "king of the jungle." Lions are known for their majestic appearance, social behavior in prides, and impressive mane in males.
  3. The African leopard is a solitary and elusive big cat known for its adaptability and excellent climbing abilities. It has a distinctive golden-yellow coat with dark spots and is known for its stealth and strength.
  4. The African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo, is a large herbivorous animal that roams the grasslands and woodlands of Africa. They are known for their unpredictable nature and formidable horns, which they use for defense against predators.
  5. Rhinoceros: Rhinoceroses are large, thick-skinned herbivores with one or two horns on their noses. They are endangered species, primarily due to poaching for their horns, which are highly valued in some traditional medicines and illegal wildlife trade.

These animals are called the Big Five not because of their size but because they are considered the most challenging animals to hunt on foot. Today, the term is more commonly associated with wildlife conservation and eco-tourism, where people seek to observe these magnificent animals in their natural habitats.

What is game drive safari?

A game drive on safari refers to a guided excursion or tour through a national park, game reserve, or wildlife conservation area, where visitors have the opportunity to observe and photograph wild animals in their natural habitat. Game drives are typically conducted using specialized vehicles, such as 4x4 safari vehicles or open-air vehicles, designed to navigate rough terrains and provide excellent visibility for wildlife viewing. Visitors are accompanied by experienced safari guides or rangers who are knowledgeable about the local wildlife, their behaviors, and habitats. These guides play a crucial role in spotting animals and providing information to the tourists.

Can I Take My Kids on Safari?

Yes, you can take your kids on safari. A safari can be a fantastic educational experience for kids, teaching them about wildlife, conservation, and different cultures. Engage them in the experience by encouraging them to ask questions and learn from the guides and rangers. Safari game drives can be long and require patience and quiet observation. Younger children might not have the attention span for extended periods of wildlife watching. Consider shorter game drives and activities suitable for children if you're traveling with little ones.

How can I prevent contracting Malaria in Africa?

Preventing malaria in Africa involves taking a combination of personal protective measures and, in some cases, antimalarial medications. Here are several strategies to help prevent contracting malaria:

  1. Antimalarial Medications: Consult a healthcare professional or a travel medicine specialist well before your trip to discuss the appropriate antimalarial medications for the specific region you plan to visit. Start taking the prescribed medication before your trip, as recommended, and continue taking it for the prescribed duration after your return.
  2. Insect Repellents: Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin and clothing. Apply the repellent as directed by the product label.
  3. Protective Clothing: Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, socks, and closed-toe shoes, especially during the evening and night when malaria-carrying mosquitoes are most active.
  4. Mosquito Nets: Sleep under a mosquito net treated with insecticide, preferably one that is long-lasting and impregnated with insecticide. Make sure the net is properly tucked under the mattress or sleeping mat to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
  5. Air-Conditioning and Screens: If you're staying in accommodation with air-conditioning, keep windows and doors closed, and use air conditioning and/or screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
When is the best time to go on a safari?

The best time for a safari in East Africa depends on your preferences and what you want to experience. East Africa has two main seasons: the dry season and the wet season. Each season has different advantages for safari participants.

  • Dry Season (June to October): This is the most popular time for safaris in Tanzania and Kenia. Animals typically gather around water sources, making it easier for observation. The vegetation is less dense, improving visibility. June to August is considered the peak time. Days are usually clear and sunny, and wildlife observation is excellent.
  • Wet Season (November to May): The wet season is characterized by short rains (November to December) and long rains (March to May). Although it's the low tourist season, it has its advantages. The landscape is lush and green, and many animals give birth during this period. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding during the wet season when migratory birds are present.
